How to Find a Reputable Massage Therapist (And Why You Should)
With all the news revolving around massage parlor shutdowns, I wanted to share some industry knowledge on the new city ordinance, massage therapist licensing, the benefits of massage, and how to find a reputable massage therapist.
While it’s unfortunate that the industry is facing negative headlines, the silver lining is that more people are now talking about massage, and that’s an opportunity to educate. Many people associate massage with spas or, unfortunately, less reputable establishments. But there’s so much more to massage than what’s often portrayed in the media (go figure.)
What is the new city ordinance and the process for becoming a licensed massage therapist?
No massage therapist likes the fact that our industry is associated with human trafficking. As a reputable, licensed massage therapist, it’s disheartening to have the industry associated with human trafficking – which is why it is so important for people to know the requirements of becoming licensed and how to find a reputable massage therapist. In order to become licensed in Illinois, you are required to have at least 500 hours of massage therapy education. Then, you must pass the national licensing examination also known as the Massage and Bodywork Licensing Examination (MBLEX for short) as well as a criminal background check. The new city ordinance now requires that all massage establishments be licensed with the city and have their Licensed Massage Therapists’ (LMTs) license posted somewhere visible for clients to see.
What are the benefits of a massage?
Incorporating a regular massage routine into your wellness regimen offers numerous benefits beyond relaxation. While many are aware of its stress-relieving properties, massage therapy also provides several lesser-known advantages:
Enhanced Lymphatic Drainage
Regular massage stimulates the lymphatic system, aiding in the removal of metabolic waste (toxins) and reducing fluid retention. This process can alleviate bloating and promote a sense of lightness. Techniques like lymphatic drainage massage are particularly effective in this regard.

2. Improved Sleep Quality
Consistent massage therapy has been linked to better sleep patterns. By reducing stress and promoting relaxation, massage can help individuals fall asleep more easily and experience deeper sleep cycles.

3. Reduction of Scar Tissue Formation
Regular massage can help prevent the formation of excessive scar tissue after injuries or surgeries. By promoting healthy tissue regeneration, massage aids in the healing process and improves the appearance of scars.
4. Enhanced Immune Function
Massage therapy has been shown to boost the immune system by increasing the activity of natural killer cells, which play a crucial role in defending the body against pathogens. This enhancement contributes to overall health and resilience.
5. Reducing Blood Pressure
Massage therapy can help lower blood pressure by reducing stress, increasing blood flow, and relaxing muscles. It can also help reduce stress hormones like cortisol.

These are just a few examples of the benefits from being on a regular massage schedule – there are many more! While some might consider massage an unnecessary expense, it can actually save you money in the long run by preventing chronic issues and avoiding costly medical bills. Think of it as an investment in your health—one that will pay dividends throughout your lifetime.
How do I find a reputable, licensed massage therapist?
If any of this has piqued your interest, you might be asking yourself now:
“How do I find a place that is right for me?”
“How do I know if the person who is working on me is licensed?”
First, you need to determine what type of massage you are wanting. If you are looking for more of a relaxation/Swedish type of massage, go to a local reputable spa. If you are looking for more of a therapeutic massage, go to google and type “therapeutic massage near me” into the search bar (or click on our booking page and schedule with us!) If you know someone who gets massages regularly, ask them who they see. Finally, read the google reviews – Google reviews are the next best thing to word of mouth if you don't know someone who can refer you to anyone. Also, please know that you can always request the license number of any massage therapist to look them up online before your visit – you can look up a professional license here :eLicense Online
Unfortunately, there are some businesses that don’t meet ethical or professional standards. Red flags include:
Generic business names, neon signs, and windows covered with curtains
Limited or no visible licensing information
Distasteful or sleazy google reviews (why some people would leave some of these reviews with their full name attached is beyond me)
While I have personal concerns about the new city ordinance and its broad application, it has at least sparked important conversations about the massage industry. If you’re looking for a massage, I encourage you to seek out licensed professionals who are dedicated to helping you improve your health and well-being.
